You can do almost anything with long hair but if you want to keep it long or grow it back out I don't recommend layers as they look terrible grown out. A cut just below/above your shoulders with bangs will do wonders if you have really long hair. If your hair is already at that length then (some people consider that long) then a short bob would do good. You also have to consider if your hair is thick because then if you go too short it might just puff out and look funny.
